A new dashboard on payment methods and payment channels on the MCS website provides clues about payment methods, payment channels, and their recent trends.
The top figure, on the share of the transaction volume by payment method, shows that the share accounted for by debit cards has remained remarkably stable between 55 and 60% since 2019. The volume of transactions made with mobiles has increased to approximately 12% in 2024, starting from 0.5% in 2019. Meanwhile, the transaction volume accounted for by credit cards has declined to about 30% in 2024.
The second figure, on the share of the transaction volume on retail goods by payment channel, shows that the share of payments in ecommerce has increased from 5% in 2019 to 10% in 2024. Thus, the share of the transaction volume at the point of sale (PoS) continues to dominate.
The figures at the bottom show the share of the transaction volume by payment method for each payment channel. Whereas credit cards still account for four times more transaction volume than debit cards in ecommerce in 2024, debit cards dominate as payment method at the point of sale. The share of debit card payments has increased in ecommerce since 2019, possibly associated with the introduction of debit cards linked to Mastercard and Visa. At the point of sale instead, the share of transaction volume accounted for by debit cards has remained quite stable relative to credit cards.
