Mapping of Merchant Categories and Classification of Location
The data, presented on our dashboards and available for download, provide breakdowns by merchant category and merchant location for point of sale (PoS) card payments. For ATM transactions the data also provides a breakdown of ATM location.
Merchant Category Mapping
We classify Merchant Categories according to the standard NOGA industry code classification. To preserve anonymity of the data we hereby cluster NOGA codes to summary categories.

Location classification
The data underlying our published data includes an identifier for the municipality (PLZ) in which a merchant / ATM is located. To preserve anonymity of the data we the location of Merchants / ATM’s by two separate methods:
- First, we classify merchants by Canton / Grossregion which corresponds to the standard international NUTS 2/3 regional classification.
- Second, we classify merchant location by agglomeration type according to SFSO.
